Anacostia Delta, Right Here at AIM

One of the many things to love about Arlington Independent Media (AIM) is the remarkable people you’re likely to encounter on any given day. So it was not surprising to discover recently that we have some local music legends in our midst.

A good crowd assembled on the evening of November 17 for a screening of "Anacostia Delta," a film celebrating DC’s legendary guitarists Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan and the many musicians who were inspired by and played with them—including two familiar faces around AIM, Billy Hancock and Dave Chappelle.

Gatton was the preeminent artist of a uniquely DC sound—a virtuosic blend of rock and roll, jazz, blues, rockabilly, country, and soul that he said came from the “Anacostia Delta.”

Ken Avis, who co-hosts The Antidote and Music Alley Radio on WERA, is a co-producer of the film and was a big fan of these talented musicians growing up—even from “across the pond” in England. “It’s been a huge thrill to actually meet some of my idols!” he declared during the event’s Q&A.

According to Ken, “The project is important as it brings to a new audience the incredible talent of DC area musicians following in the footsteps of legendary guitarists Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan—two virtuoso, innovative musicians who are fading from memory in the area and who spearheaded a DC sound that synthesized the multiple genres of jazz, country, rock and roll, and gospel, which were dominant in the DC area over the last 70 years.”
The film pulses with Gatton’s evolving and remarkable sound. It is built around a reunion concert held at The Birchmere and features extensive archival clips and interviews with literally dozens of musicians who worked with and learned from Gatton. It is a love letter to DC’s rich musical traditions.
"Anacostia Delta" is due for release in 2018, and the independent film-making team is trying to raise the final funds to complete the film. For more information, or to support the project, visit: http://www.anacostiadelta.com.
