Master of Independent Media 2013 Workshops

 AIM offers Workshops in: Digital Still Photography, Location Lighting, Photoshop, Advanced Camera Technique, WordPress, as well as Screenwriting, Producing and Directing Narrative, Marketing Media Projects and Documentary Production, through our very popular Master of Independent Media (MIM), advanced media studies workshops. AIM master level courses offer students an opportunity to learn advanced media technology and production techniques and to develop an in-depth understanding of the language of mass media. 

Through highly interactive, hands-on classes, students learn the production techniques of the professionals. Specialized instructors, drawn from the finest of the D.C. area media arts community, work with students as they explore the many facets of media production.

Documentary Production  
January 16 - February 27, 2013
Instructor: Chithra Jeyaram

In this 6 week course, students will gain an in-depth understanding of the documentary production process, by developing an original idea into a short work to bescreened at the end of the course. The coursework combines theory, history and practice. Hands-on production technique, screenings, readings, lectures and discussion prepare students to develop and produce and quality documentary work. Students gain production experience working individually and in groups.  The course includes an emphasis on research, pre-production planning and writing as integral components of documentary production

Chithra Jeyaram is an award winning documentary filmmaker who works to use filmmaking to break societal barriers and communicate the realities of life as they unfold.  Chithra holds a MFA in film production from the University of Texas in Austin.  She is the recipient of the Dian Sherzer Award for Social Awareness for her work in progress, "Refugee Musings."  Additionally, her documentary, "Mijo (My Son)," has been screening at festivals across the country and was named best in show in the 2011 Rosebud Film & Video Festival.

Digital Still Photography - I

Instructor: Jason Horowitz

Digital Camera Through demonstrations, hands-on exercises, assignments, and  critiques, students explore the many technical and aesthetic  aspects of digital image making.  This practical workshop will  help you get the most out of your camera and take the pictures  you've always wanted.  Instructor Jason Horowitz will cover a  wide array of topics ranging from digital camera types and how to choose among them to the basics of color, composition, correct exposure technique, creative use of flash, and digital workflow.

Jason Horowitz has been a professional commercial and fine arts photographer for more than 25 years. He holds a BA in Photography from George Washington University and a MFA in Photography from Virginia Commonwealth University.  He has taught on both the high school and university levels holding adjunct faculty positions at Georgetown University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Marymount University, Maryland College of Art and Design and Corcoran College of Art.  Jason's commercial work has been published worldwide and his fine art is part of the permanent collections of the Corcoran Gallery of Art and George Washington University, in addition to many individual and corporate collections.

Lighting Kit

The Location Lighting Master Class is a hands-on, practical workshop that

teachesstudents professional-level location lighting skills. Through demonstrations, lecture, exercises, and in-class activities, students master the art and science of light, shadow, contrast, diffusion and color.  Instructor Nate Clapp, of Nomad Productions, will guide students to a new level of competence in creative location lighting under a variety of real world circumstances.

Nate Clapp holds an MA in film and video from American University and has worked professionally in the DC area's film and video industry for over 20 years.  Nate is a member of The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, which has afforded him the opportunity to work in the camera department on many large features such as Runaway Bride, The Recruit and Liberty Heights.  He has also worked on a wide variety of documentaries, commercials and television series including, Homicide, Life on the Street, K Street, The Wire, and West Wing.

Narrative Screenwriting   
February 25 - April 1, 2013
Instructor: Lucy Gebre-Egziabher

NotebookGeared toward narrative film and television, this class focuses on crafting a story in a clear, organized and descriptive manner.  Through examples, exercises and in-class critiques, students get practical, hands-on experience in writing for film and television.  Upon completion, participants will have learned not only the techniques of writing for media, but the fundamentals of good storytelling, resulting in treatments and shooting scripts that effectively and efficiently tell their stories.

Lucy Gebre-Egziabher is an award winning, independent filmmaker who lives in Arlington, VA.  She earned a MFA degree in Film from Howard University.  Lucy has produced & directed many narrative films as well as organizational videos for Teret Productions, a production company she founded in 1999.  Lucy guest lectures and writes about media, critical studies and production in the US and abroad. In addition, she is currently in development for her next film project, a feature film that will be shot entirely in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Introduction to Wordpress

Instructor: Maurice Martin

It's not just for blogging anymore! WordPress is a versatile, easy-to-use content management system that can give a professional look to your website. This interactive class will teach participants how to activate a WordPress site, arrange menus and pages, apply an attractive visual theme, embed video, manage visitor comments, and monitor traffic to your site. Ideal for one-person web operations.  

Maurice Martin has created Web sites for Arlington Independent Media, the Society for Technical Communication, the Arlington New Directions Coalition, DC Playwrights, and others. He has a master's degree in computer science from Louisiana State University, and has worked as a contract systems integrator and software developer for the Department of Defense. He currently works at the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, where he manages tech research projects for electrical utilities and contributes to that organization's Web site.

Photoshop - Digital Darkroom

This three-week workshop provides a comprehensive overview of the Photoshop program and will guide students through the fundamentals of using Photoshop CS6 as a digital darkroom. Through demonstrations and in-class exercises students will learn the skills needed to manage, correct, enhance and create digital images using this powerful program.  Digital workflow, working with metadata, manipulating color and contrast, as well as sizing, sharpening and outputting images are among the areas in this informative workshop.

This hands-on course is designed to teach participants to fully control the technical and aesthetic elements of camera work.  Explore camera controls and settings in-depth and learn the "tricks of the trade" that get you the results you want, even under challenging conditions.  Effective camera movement and shot selection, use of focus, depth of field, lighting and camera movement are among the areas covered in this practical class

This course will lead students through the process of producing and directing narrative film and video works.  Through lectures, screenings and in-class exercises, instructor Lucy Gebre-Egziabher will help students gain a firm understanding of the director's role in the independent production process.  Visual storytelling, script interpretation, working with management and creative teams, production management, auditioning and directing actors and working with editors are among the areas to be covered in this engaging, fast paced workshop.
