Master of Independent Media 2012 Workshops


hand holding tvsArlington Independent Media is pleased to announce the schedule of our very popular Master of Independent Media workshops.  AIM master level courses offer students an opportunity to learn a wide variety of media technology and production techniques and to develop an in-depth understanding of the language of mass media.

Through highly interactive, hands-on classes, students learn the production techniques of the professionals. Specialized instructors, drawn from our area's media arts community, work with students as they explore the many facets of media production, including location lighting, camera technique, web development, digital still photography and Photoshop.  


AIM's Master of Independent Media program is also ideal for individuals who wish to develop a professional-level understanding of production that extends beyond the technical.  Courses in writing, producing, public relations, production design and media criticism make the MIM program a complete advanced education in media production

 

 


Location Lighting 
February 22 - March 28, 2012 

Instructor: Nate Clapp

The Arlington Independent Media, Location Lighting Master Class is a hands-on, practical workshop that teaches students professional-level location lighting skills. Through demonstrations, lecture, exercises, and in-class activities, students master the art and science of light, shadow, contrast, diffusion and color.  Instructor Nate Clapp, of Nomad Productions, will guide students to a new level of competence in creative location lighting under a variety of real world circumstances.  

Nate Clapp has holds an MA in film and video from American University and has worked professionally in the DC area's film and video industry for 20 years.  Nate is a member of The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, which has afforded him the opportunity to work in the camera department on many large features such as Runaway Bride, The Recruit and Liberty Heights.  He has also worked on a wide variety of documentaries, commercials and television series including, Homicide, Life on the Street, K Street, The Wire, and West Wing.

Digital Still Photography - I   
March 5 - April 9, 2012  

Instructor: Jason Horowitz


Through demonstrations, hands-on exercises, assignments, and critiques, students explore the many technical and aesthetic aspects of digital image making.  This practical workshop will help you get the most out of your camera and take the pictures you've always wanted.  Instructor Jason Horowitz will cover a wide array of topics ranging from digital camera types and how to choose among them to the basics of color, composition, correct exposure technique, creative use of flash, and digital workflow.


Jason Horowitz has been a professional commercial and fine arts photographer for more than 25 years. He holds a BA in Photography from George Washington University and a MFA in Photography from Virginia Commonwealth University.  He has taught on both the high school and university level holding adjunct faculty positions at Georgetown University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Marymount University, Maryland College of Art and Design and Corcoran College of Art.  Jason's commercial work has been published worldwide and his fine art is part of the permanent collections of the Corcoran Gallery of Art and George Washington University, in addition to many individual and corporate collections.

Photoshop - Digital Darkroom
April 16 - 30, 2012  

Instructor: Jason Horowitz

This three week workshop provides a comprehensive overview of the Photoshop program and will guide students through the fundamentals of using Photoshop CS5 as a digital darkroom. Through demonstrations and in-class exercises students will learn the skills needed to manage, correct, enhance and create digital images using this powerful program.  Digital workflow, working with metadata, manipulating color and contrast, as well as sizing, sharpening and outputting images are among the areas in this informative workshop.

Advance Camera Technique

This hands-on course is designed to teach participants to fully control the technical and aesthetic elements of camera work.  Explore camera controls and settings in-depth and learn the "tricks of the trade" that get you the results you want under challenging conditions.  Effective camera movement and shot selection, use of focus, depth of field, lighting and camera movement are among the areas covered in this practical class.
